8 young people with severe multiple disabilities and their companions will travel almost 100 km by adapted bicycle to their destination of Santiago de Compostela.
On September 6th, Arnau, Arturo, Celia, Fernando, Jesús David, Marc, Nacho and Silvia, 8 young people with severe multiple disabilities, will begin the Camino adventure, accompanied by their companions and families.
They will leave Vigo, and travel in 3 stages over 3 days and will arrive at the Plaza del Obradora on Sunday, September 8th.
The Lukas Foundation adapted bikes are already very well known around Sant Joan D’Alacant where the residents often see the Lukas Foundation young people riding through the streets and squares or along the Muchavista beach.
These very special bicycles are a fantastic resource for leisure and adapted
sports offering multiple therapeutic benefits in the cognitive and motor areas to people with disabilities.
The Lukas Foundation adapted bicycles are available to families with a child with a disability at the FLK Centre, located in the Health Cluster of Sant Joan d’Alacant.
In Madrid, families with children with a disability can enjoy adapted bicycles at the MOBEO Rental Centre in the Madrid Río Park. This project we hope will be replicated and extended nationwide.
The Lukas Foundation also haa a travelling adapted bicycle, for use and enjoyment, throughout Spain, which promoted this project.
The Lukas Foundation has been carefully and enthusiastically preparing this trip for weeks. The trip will be supported and run with the help of professionals such as Arma Kleinepier, a specialist in bicycle route organization and Javier Pitillas, head of Discamino, an association in Vigo that has been helping pilgrims with special needs for 15 years.
The Ford company is also an important collaborator in making this trip happen, as they will be providing an E-Transit van, as well as three volunteers to help the Camino travellers along the way.
Van Raam/Tricimad, the official supplier of the Foundation for adapted bicycles, will be providing all kinds of material and spare parts for the Camino journey.
The adventure will begin a few days before the Camino. First, the adapted bicycles will be picked up from the Lukas Foundation in Sant Joan d’Alacant and taken to Galicia along with other essential materials. The bikes and other essentials will be transported in the van from the Anneke Residence by Lisette and Marino. Lisette and Marino will not only transport the bikes and essentials but will also offer critical logistical support during all stages of the journey.
By September 5, the eight participants will arrive one by one, by train, by car and by plane, travelling together with their relatives and companions. Most of them will stay at the Briallos Hostel. At the Briallos Hostel, they understand the special needs of people with disabilities, and they are always willing to provide all the facilities needed.
On Friday morning, the 6th, the eight young people will begin the Camino together with their companions and all the logistical support.
The first stage will go from Vigo to Pontevedra (28 km), the second stage from Pontevedra to Valga (34 km), and the third and final stage from Valga to Santiago de Compostela (34km), thus completing this fantastic challenge on Sunday 8th.
