More and more young people with disabilities are joining the challenge of riding a bike and are enjoying new activities.  For this reason, we would like to expand our #sonrisassobreruedas (smiles on wheels) project. We need more adapted bicycles that allow us to undertake challenges such as the Camino de Santiago on wheels just like we did with our young people last September. Below you will find the magnificent testimony of Carmen, Ismael’s companion and FLK volunteer.

“Our time on the Camino was perfect, even when we had a rainy day.  When I awoke to the rain I was so happy and could not help but say out loud, “what a beautiful day!” For those of us, who come from Alicante and barely see the rain, that awakening was wonderful. It was a day full of enjoyment.  We saw the falls, we enjoyed the our planned stage of 30 kms of biking and although we got wet, the children’s faces were always beaming with smiles.   I felt so overwhelmed with wonderful emotions.  The only bad thing was the fall I had in the bathroom. At that moment I realized how difficult it must be to live day by day with limited mobility. When I am with Ishmael I enjoy it very much, but visiting for a day here or there is very different to being with him for 5 straight days.

For these 5 days, Ishmael was my first priority and I had little time for my own routines.  The days flew by and because of that I made a few mistakes.  When I went to bathe Ishmael, I didn’t realize that I was wearing the wrong shoes, so I slipped and fell to the floor. Luckily nothing happened to me, but I realized how hard and admirable the work of families is and how little time they have for themselves. One small mistake can have significant repurcussions. Being confronted with the reality of these lives and these people strikes directly at the heart and moves you to help and be involved.   This is a world in which there is no evil, it is all beautiful. “

 Carmen

As you can see these bicycles allow us to have wonderful adventures.  For other young people to enjoy outdoor leisure we need more adapted bicycles and that is only possible with your help. Please consider donating €10
